Thanks. Will: There are several previewers among the files at wsmr-simtel20.army.mil. Here is a description of their collection... PD1:-READ.ME This file. PD1:SB26TEX.ARC TeX 2.98 plus files for Plain TeX. Adapted for Turbo Pascal by Wayne G. Sullivan. If at least 562,000 bytes of RAM are available (per CHKDSK), then sbtex can run to the memory limit for 'standard' versions of TeX. For sb26 to run at least 431,000 bytes of available RAM (CHKDSK data) are required. In sb26 font swapping is included, with unwanted font data gently dumped onto disk. [sb26tex appears somewhat simpler than dostex to install. It does not include a .dvi previewer, so it doesn't require font files and takes only about 350 KB on the disk.] PD1:DOSTEX1.ARC PD1:DOSTEX2.ARC PD1:DOSTEX3.ARC PD1:DOSTEX4.ARC PD1:DOSTEX5.ARC PD1:DOSTEX6.ARC DosTeX is Electronetics, Incorporated's port of TeX to the Microsoft MSDOS Operating system for IBM-compatible personal computers. DosTeX version 2.93a corresponds to TeX version 2.93. DosTeX is a complete and true implementation of TeX, having passed the `trip' verification suite. This distribution contains versions of TeX, LaTeX (Leslie Lamport's macro package) and AmSTeX (American Mathematical Society's macro package). System requirements are 640K memory and 4.5Mb disk space. Includes: DVI2HERC - A .dvi previewer for Hercules Graphics Cards DVIEPS - TeX DVI to Epson translator PD1:BIBTEX99.ARC PD1:CDVI12.ARC CDVICGA/EGA, CDVIO, CDVIH and CDVI-2 are programs for making making TeX DVI output visible on the graphics screen of compatible PC's. CDVIH is for Hercules 720 by 348 graphics; CDVICGA, for CGA graphics; CDVIEGA, for EGA graphics; CDVIO, for Olivetti/ATT 640 by 400 graphics; CDVI-2 for VGA/MCGA graphics. [CDVI series programs are faster than DVIVGA because they have fonts stored internally. However, this restricts them to PLAIN fonts. Zooming and horizontal scrolling are not implemented.] PD1:DVIEW.ARC DVIEW is a program for IBM PC compatibles for viewing TeX .dvi output files, including those using the MIT graphics extensions. Currently DVIEW supports the CGA and the high-resolution mode of the Toshiba T3100 (& presumably the T5100); other displays may be supported in time. PD1:DVIVGA.INF PD1:DVIVGA1.ARC PD1:DVIVGA2.ARC PD1:DVIVGA3.ARC PD1:DVIVGA4.ARC PD1:DVIVGA5.ARC PD1:DVIVGA6.ARC PD1:DVIVGA7.ARC PD1:DVIVGA8.ARC PD1:DVIVGA9.ARC DVIVGA is a TeX screen previewer for the IBM PC. This driver and the associated font files are public domain. It is part of a family written by Nelson Beebe of the University of Utah and others. The screen previewer is an adaptation of this code by Doug McDonald at the University of Illinois. Requires an IBM PC computer with 512K or more of memory. Alternately, a compatible with similar specs. The screen driver needs an EGA, VGA or MCGA graphics adapter, or a clone. A clock speed of 8MHz minimum is essentially necessary, unless you are a very patient person. A 20 or 25MHz machine is fast enough that you will be very happy. A fast hard disk is also necessary. [DVIVGA reads its fonts off the disk, which makes it slower but more general than CDVIEGA. Horizontal scrolling and zooming are implemented.] PD1:PCWRITEX.ARC PD1:WEB.ARC PD1:HP2TEX.ARC PD1:UNRETEX.ARC Hope this helps. - Jim Van Zandt (jrv@mbunix.mitre.org) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 31 OCT 89 16:11 N From: MATAP01%UNIPAD.INFN.IT@UWAVM.ACS.WASHINGTON.EDU Subject: Previewer for VAXstation running DECwindows Keywords: previewer, VAXstation, DECwindows I have a VAXstation 3100 running DECwindows. A TeXnician told me that dvitovdu does not work for this station. I tried with DVIDIS, but a "uWVS software not installed.." was returned. Now DECwindows does not work with VWS software, so I did not install it, but now I do not figure out which type of previewer I can use. If you know the answer, please let me know it, together with a DECnet node (if existing) where I can copy it. Thanks in advance. Flavio Sartoretto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: 30 Oct 89 1240 PST From: Don Knuth Subject: New DVItype Keywords: TeX, dvitype As of today, the new TeX sources at Stanford contain DVItype version 3, which differs from the old by having a new mode of output intermediate between "terse" and "verbose". Old codes were 0 (errors only), 1 (terse), 2 (verbose), 3 (theworks); new codes are 0 (errors only), 1 (terse), 2 (mnemonics), 3 (verbose), 4 (works). As before you run the TRIP test with level 2. This will now choose the new mode, which will still validate the TRIP test although it will lead to files that are almost identical in spite of floating point rounding differences. (The old TRIP test could give you a TRIP.TYP file that looked almost totally different from the "definitive" TRIP.TYP, even when the test was passed.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 30 OCT 89 20:19 N From: FISICA%ASTRPD.INFN.IT%ICINECA2.BITNET@UWAVM.ACS.WASHINGTON.EDU Subject: TeX servers: addendum Keywords: file servers I would like to add to the infos provided by Peter Flynn that, together with Marisa Luvisetto, we keep a TeX archive for SPAN/DECNET. Obviously using only the Computer Modern fonts > and no PostScript fonts at all would have used up even more memory, > and may even have prevented printing even a single page... this rumour simply isn't true. It is perfectly easy to send 1270 dpi CMR bitmaps to a Linotron for page after page with no memory problems (assuming a reasonably intelligent dvi to PS program). I have happily printed a document with about 40 different CMR fonts at 1270 dpi on a single page. I understand that there are several errata lists for this book in different files. I thought I had found them all. Nevertheless, my copy appears to have the following mistakes in it which I had not found mentioned in any of the errata lists I had looked at:- (i) on p. 296, there is an example of what happens when someone tries to use a superscript character outside mathematics. Two lines should read :- ^ The second line of the two should have a single "up arrow" symbol in it. However, in my copy this symbol is missing. A colleague's paperback edition has this symbol in it, though. (ii) on p. 375, line 27 begins "depending or whether or not". It seems that this should read "depending on whether or not". As I said, I thought I had found all the errata files. It seems I may have missed one. Can someone tell me where to find the corrections to these typos? Then I can make the other corrections in the same errata file to my copy of the book. Please reply by electronic mail - the dissemination of TeXhax to our site is somwhat flaky. J. M. Hicks (a.k.a. Evidence for this: \def\eleven{11} \pageno=1 \ifodd\pageno \pageno=\eleven \fi \eleven \number\pageno some text \bye This example is strange indeed: the only output is the 'some text', and the page number is 11111. Source of the trouble is not the \if, but the fact that you are assigning a number. TeX's numbers can be dynamically composed (e.g. 1\ifsomething 5\else 4\fi3 gives 153 or 143) so TeX scans ahead until he finds something that is not part of the number that is to be assigned. In this case he got: - \eleven, expands to 11, so part of the number, - \fi, expands to nothing, so just go on - \eleven, again 11, still go on - \number\pageno, gives 1, so go on a little bit further - 'some text' aha! no digits, so my number is 11111. It is somewhat strange that inadvertently expanding the \fi does not lead to a 'missing \fi' message. Well, he encountered it, so it wasn't missing, but still...
