[...] >from TeX, and said that the design of the Computer Modern fonts >prevented them from doing any better than 300 dpi. I have helped in producing two books using TeX on such a Linotronic. Both had the main part of the text typeset using Times Roman (a built-in font in common PostScript printer). One of the books required a lot of math, which was done by generating the math fonts at 1270 dpi using Metafont, and using those fonts alongside the Times Roman text. To my eyes this was Real Ugly (tm) but the engineers doing the book insisted they liked it. One problem with this was that the PostScript generated had the bitmaps for the math fonts in it. This ended up consuming a lot of the limited memory in the Linotronic being used, and only a page or two at a time could be typeset. Obviously using only the Computer Modern fonts and no PostScript fonts at all would have used up even more memory, and may even have prevented printing even a single page... One alternative I have heard mentioned is that some company (ArborText?) has PostScript outlines for the CM family (oh heresy!). These would most likely be unsatisfactory at low resolutions unless someone got real good at adding hints to the fonts, but might be reasonable at high resolution. Assuming you can get a Linotronic to load those fonts, you may save on the string memory that the hexadecimal encoding for bitmaps is so fond of. Please keep us informed of what you find, a couple more faculty here have books on the back burner...
