These qualifiers may be written instead as the English name for the language, as synonyms. The subject, if included, is ignored by the TeXserver mailer. Now the only problem is the `yourname%yoursite@relay' --- this should specify YOUR mail address, as seen by a user at Aston, so for users directly connected on Janet, this then reduces to yourname@yoursite, in normal NRS format. Determining your address relative to Aston ****************************************** As a temporary facility (pending rewriting of the mailer to obviate the need for users to quote their own addresses) I've provided an ``identification'' service at Aston. Send e-mail to rmcs_tex@uk.ac.aston.kirk (I'm sure you can work out from the above how to do this), with the subject consisting of the word(s) ``Where Am I''. The case doesn't matter, and you can have as much or as little white space between the words (including none), but there must not be any leading or trailing space, nor any question mark. You should receive a reply telling you the address to `plug into' the request to be sent to TeXserver. If all else fails ***************** Anybody having difficulty is welcome to contact me: just make your subject line incorporate the words `help wanted' (with one single intervening space) and I'll try to work out your reverse path from whatever magic caballistic symbols the CBS mailer shows me. But before you do that, check the format of your outgoing message: *did* you remember the three hyphens, and the return address on the NEXT line, with HELP on the one after that? For the first time, I want to use this facility to generate high quality output from TeX (actually LaTeX). When I called the keepers of the Linotronic yesterday they expressed dismay that I was proposing to give them Postscript derived from TeX, and said that the design of the Computer Modern fonts prevented them from doing any better than 300 dpi. Does this sound sensible? I thought that TeX, and Computer Modern fonts, were designed for the production of "beautiful books. " I am using Computer Modern fonts because I do not want to spend the rest of the year figuring out how various parameters must be changed to accomodate some other font family, and I don't even know which collection of fonts will do a harmonious job of mathematics intensive typesetting. Please do not tell me how superior some other font family is to Computer Modern. I normally run TeX (Textures) on a MacII, but I can equally well run it on a Sun3. This is the caption text of figure 1, and this text is fairly long He finds that in essence for figures \caption{TEXT} == \@makecaption{\thefigure}{TEXT} so he tries to redefine (again, leaving details aside) \@makecaption#1#2 == \hbox{#1\vtop{#2}} He then observes that \caption{\label{foo}bar} leads to Figure 1. bar This is what happens: - a \label command translates to a \write of some information to the .aux file, - a write is not just an IO operation, it is placed in a 'whatsit' item on the current list. The actual write will take place when that list is shipped out; this is the only way to make \pageref possible, - TeX doesn't add a parskip glue at the beginning of a paragraph if it is in internal vertical mode, and the current list is empty. In Johannes' case TeX is in internal vertical mode when processing the caption text, but the list is not empty: there is a thingummajig, whatchammacallit, a whatsit. Therefore \parskip is added, and the vtop is aligned with the reference point of the glue box, any following text dangling underneath. Some remedies: (1) place the label at the end of the caption text, (2) put 'leavevmode' in the caption macro, the whatsit is then placed on the horizontal list, but perhaps best: (3) use the 'hangfrom' macro of LaTeX, which is designed to have text behave in exactly the intended way. One responded to my original posting and could only come up with a solution that involved a 128-way \case statement. The problem: given a number in, say, \cc, perform an \immediate\write of \char\cc. \newcount\cc \cc=65 \immediate\write16{\char\cc} doesn't work. Neither do a whole constellation of attempts using \xdef's, \expandafter's, \toks, etc, etc, etc. Kudos to the winner. Maybe if it's tough enough they could write it up for TUGboat. BTW, this problem was submitted by a user here with a legitimate need for it, so this is not entirely an academic question. Peter Scott (pjs@grouch.jpl.nasa.gov) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 17 Oct 89 1:55:16 MDT From: Jacob Gore Subject: Doing documents in Russian Keywords: LaTeX, Russian Over the last few months, I find myself typesetting Russian text with LaTeX more and more often. I use the pre-generated 300dpi mcyr and mcyb fonts, and the commonly available cyracc.def and cyrillic.sty. There are several things that make it unnecessarily painful, and I wonder if there are relatively simple (i.e., not too time-consuming) ways to fix things up. The first problem is the way the characters are assigned. Now, the Russian alphabet contains 33 letters, an American keyboard has 26, so some mapping is, of course, needed. But the one produced by the combination of the mcyr font and cyracc.def, while it may be optimal for its stated purpose ("so that input using the `new' (post-1982) Math. Reviews cyrillic transliteration will be converted directly to cyrillic text"), is not a good match for Russian text: 1. The letter 'Te' followed by the letter 'Es' is a very common occurance in Russian, but "ts" is a ligature for the letter 'Tse'. I don't think 'Tse' is used nearly as often as "TeEs". Having all those "t{\cydot}s"'s in the input is a pain. Is there a way to make "ts" generate separate letters, "TeEs" instead of 'Tse'? 2. The letter Myagkii Znak is also common. "{\cprime}" is not very convenient, and the alternative input, "p1" is not very mnemonic. Is there a way to assign that character to an apostrophe ("'")? (And, while I'm at it, assign the Tverdyi Znak character to grave accent ("`")?) 3. Same problem with using "{\u i}" for I-kratkoye. Can it be assigned to "j"? The second problem is hyphenation. It has three aspects: 1. English hyphenation rules don't fit Russian (no surprise here). 2. Hyphenation can (and often does) breaks up ligatures. For example, "shch" is a ligature for the letter Shcha. The English hyphenation table seems to like hyphenating sh-ch, so instead of one letter, Shcha, I get two: Sh\-Ch. 3. Words containing the letters Yo ("\"e"), I-kratkoye ("{\u i}"), Myagkii Znak ("{\cprime}" or "p1") and Tverdyi Znak ("\cdprime" or "p2") cannot be listed in the \hyphenation{...} command. The only way I found to prevent bad hyphenation in such words is by inserting "\-"'s in the text. I don't suppose someone has a hyphenation table for Russian? Any other suggestions on how to ease these difficulties? And, the last problem... can't use 300dpi fonts in the previewer I'm using. Does anybody have these fonts at other resolutions? Does anybody still have their sources and the version of Metafont that they were written for? I realize that the "proper" way to do this is to design a Russian font family using the current version of Metafont (one whose appearance fits better with CMR would be nice), but I have neither time, nor expertise (or time to acquire it), nor artistic inclination to undertake such a task. Thanks in advance for all responses. I will summarize to TeXhax any direct replies I get in e-mail (unless, of course, you ask me not to include your reply in the summary).
