Perhaps someone currently involved with the VMS documentation effort can bring us up to date on this ambitious, and impressive, use of TeX. I would be surprised if DEC did not guard the macros closely as a proprietary trade secret. Perhaps DECUS could put pressure on them to make them available to encourage in-house VMS documentation to conform to corporate documentation. ------------------------------ From: DBUERGER%SCU.BITNET@forsythe.stanford.edu Date: Mon, 2 May 88 11:25 PDT Subject: Problem with "Page Layout in LaTeX" from latest TUGboat The LaTeX style file code published in TUGboat, vol. 9 (1988) no. 1, pp. 80-82 ("Page Layout in LaTeX") is incorrect and will not work. Apparently author Kent McPherson submitted his article in LaTeX source, and TUGboat translated this into Plain TeX source plus made other modifications. A different style file has been created by Kent (who doesn't have net access). It works on his VAX that runs LaTeX dated 7 Jan 86, with an article style file dated 17 Dec 85. However, this style file does *not* work on my VAX or PC, which both run LaTeX dated 15 Sept. 87, article style file dated 9 Jun 87. Both of us run unmodified LaTeX and style files. Kent is updating his version of TeX and LaTeX, and will release a LAYOUT.STY file that works on the most recent releases. I will post a copy to TeXHaX, probably within a month, when his corrected style file is available. Everything means: everything, except math italic and math symbol. I tried the real stupid approach: \def\rm$\sf. That works quite well. What is left are: - \it, \sf and therefore \em, they switch to italic/slanted ROMAN - \bf (used extensively in chapter headings and such), switches to boldface roman, - footnotemarks. As they are typeset as $$number$ they use math numbers, which are in roman again. The last one I know how to take care of (redefine the command which makes the footnote mark), the first two I don't. The real hassle is the following: I wouldn't mind some characters being from the wrong font (at this early stage, I sure will mind later), but the laser printer has to load a whole set of roman font, just because of a chapter heading and some emphesized text, so it can't do a single page without having to reload fonts all the time. I would love to get rid of that. Thanks a lot in advance ! I guess LaTex would process these float only if it saw \end{document}. Is there any other ways to enforce the processing of floats? I use begin{figure}[p] to put each figure in one page. Then, I was trying to put all the pictures, tables in the middle of the text. What happened was that figure 1, and tables 1 -- 7 were put inside the text while the rest of floats were put at the end of the paper (after the referece). I wonder how this could happen! Since my references takes about 20 pages and the whole paper (plus floats) takes about 80 pages, I expected all the floats show up in the middle of the text, or at least before the references. Another thing is, few figures are too large to fit in one page. I divide the figure into two pages, one page for pasting the picture and the second page for the legend. What happened was the first page of figure 2 appeared on page 27 and the second page of figure 2 appeared on page 53. Is there a way to control the placements of figures so one can follow the other? Certain legal documents are required to use underlined text, for blocks of up to paragraph size. I can underline a word at a time, but there has to be a better way to do it. I have been completely unable to make underlining for a large block of text work as it should. Linebreaking doesn't seem to work at all, and if I break lines manually (ugly in itself) they aren't adjusted properly. As an interim measure, I asked about the availability of an old version of the APALIKE.BST file that would work with version 0.98i of Bibtex. Someone was kind enough to send me an old version. I have also modified it a bit to make it come somewhat closer to actual American Psych. Association style--- use of ampersands instead of the word 'and', and some other minor changes. I will be glad to pass along copies, though I strongly recommend the APALIKE files available on the Rochester style collection if you have access to version 0.99c of Bibtex. | Don Kleinmuntz | | high tech: dklein@sloan.bitnet or dklein@sloan.mit.edu | | medium tech: (617) 253-2430 | | low tech: Sloan School of Management | | Massachusetts Institute of Technology | | 50 Memorial Drive, E52-568 | | Cambridge, MA 02139 | ------------------------------ %%% %%% Concerning subscriptions, address changes, unsubscribing: %%% BITNET: send a one-line mail message to LISTSERV@TAMVM1.BITNET: %%% SUBSCRIBE TEX-L % to subscribe %%% %%% All others: send mail to %%% texhax-request@score.stanford.edu %%% please send a valid arpanet address!! %%% %%% %%% All submissions to: texhax@score.stanford.edu %%% %%%\bye %%% ------------------------------ End of TeXhax Digest ************************** -------
