Chapter 24 of The METAFONTBook ("Discreteness and Discretion") does an excellent job of addressing this problem in the context of METAFONT. METAFONT is versatile and precise enough to make it possible to write a description for a character such that will be rendered well even at medium-low resolutions. Natually, no font below 12 point is going to do well at 92 dpi (i.e.: a Sun screen), but fonts down to 5 point look good at 300. Care must be taken, however, when writing the mathematical description to make sure that critical parts of the letter (horizontal and vertical strokes and tangents) fall exactly on pixel boundaries. The set is completely parametrized so that magnification and aspect can easily be varied. The team is now working on book-like fonts (modern Hebrew typeface). Those sets are standard MetaFont input and were processed on a VAX under VMS, and tested with a DEC-LN03 printer. At this time no real Hebrew document was produced yet. Because sources for a TeX running on a PC are not available, I cannot apply the elegant method presented by Knuth and McKay in the last issue of TuGBoat. I have not solved yet the mirroring of Hebrew text (which I am trying to perform thru an additional DVI-to-DVI step, sacrificing line breaking problems to modularity and transportability). An other problem is that I have not obtained any funding yet to cover the (very low) salary which I owe to those students who worked for me. I may thus need to ask for a small contribution to distribute those fonts, which will go thru the University accounting; because of that charge it would be an abuse to use Bitnet to distribute the fonts,etc,etc... It is my hope that I will convince people here that it will cost more money to organize commercial-like distribution, than to simply pay those students hours, and distribute the Technion Hebrew fonts for free. Way back in the old days when I said that I seemed to remember some incompatibility between DVI files, I was right. The following crucial file structure differences exist between TeX 2.0 (from Stanford) and TeX 1.0 (from who knows where, ArborText I think). TFM files: 1.0- Recfm V, single record. 2.0- Recfm F1024, multiple records DVI files: 1.0- Recfm F2048 2.0- Recfm F1024 This is sufficient to mess up some device drivers; DVItype seems to cope admirably, but DVIXER will choke on a new DVI, and TeX 2.0 will not deal with old tfm files. I have no idea what format a DVI file created on another system would look like; if somebody on BITNET would be kind enough to send me (In netdata format since punch and print files formats won't hold long lines; on VMS using JNET the command is SEND/FILE/NET) a sample DVI and a sample TFM from an operating system other than VM, I'll see how they do on our system. -Don Hosek ------------------------------ Date: Thu 21 May 87 09:10:53-PDT From: Allan G. Each figure shows something and the table lists some numbers about what's in the figure. Together, the figure and table are enough to almost fill the page. Unfortunately, LaTeX sometimes puts the pairs together on a page with no text, and sometimes it splits them apart onto separate pages with text above or below. For my purposes, figure-table pair can float anywhere as long as they appear on the same page. I guess I'm looking for some sort of grouping environment where I can go \begin{multiple-figures-and-tables} \begin{figure} . . \end{figure} \begin{table} . . \end{table} \end{multiple-figures-and-tables} and get the outer environment to float somewhere while the things inside stay together. If anybody knows a way to do this or can offer some advice I would be very grateful. Thanks. These take up much more room than the pk format files. Can dvi2ps or one of the Utah drivers be adapted to pk formats? If so, how? If not, are drivers available for 4BSD systems which use the pk format fonts? We would prefer PD drivers but inexpensive solutions would be fine too. Thanks in advance.
